Preer Travels to Kenya for Service Trip
In July, IU SLIS-Indy Professor Jean Preer will travel in Kenya with IUPUI faculty and students, and teachers from the Indianapolis Public Schools on a study and service trip funded by a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Grant. The fourteen participants will visit the three campuses of Moi University, learning from members of the Moi faculty about Kenyan history and culture and the issues the country now faces. During an extended stay in Eldoret, each member of the group will work in a local service agency. Dr. Preer will be working in the public library in Eldoret, a part of the Kenya National Library.
The trip emphasizes the interests of IUPUI in service learning and international engagement and builds on the extended partnership between Indiana University and Moi University on health issues, particularly the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. Participants, who have met in four pre-departure settings, will be asked to reflect on their experiences and to develop materials or presentations that can be shared with others. Dr. Preer hopes to make contact with faculty in the Moi University School of Information Sciences and looks forward to telling students about her trip after she returns on August 6.
