Master of Library Science/Master of Arts in History (53 credits)

Guidelines effective for those entering this dual degree as of Fall 2005. Interest in public history, genealogy, historic preservation, and archives and museum administration creates a demand for professionals with expertise in both historical research and information management. The dual M.L.S.–M.A. in history program requires completion of a minimum of 53 credit hours of graduate course work. Students must apply for admission to the master's programs of both the School of Library and Information Science and the Department of History and meet the admission criteria established for each. The two degrees must be awarded simultaneously. Contact the History Chair, Dr. Philip Scarpino.
Requirements for the Master of Library Science degree are as follows:
Meet the computer skills requirements through S401 or equivalent courses or experiences.

Completion of SLIS M.L.S. Foundation courses (15 credit hours minimum):

  • S504 or S503 – 3 credits
  • S502 – 3 credits
  • S551 or S552 in either academic librarianship or special librarianship
  • S502 – 3 credits
  • S506 or S505 – 3 credits

Completion of six credits from SLIS in library history and literature from the following:

  • S582 Preservation – 3 credits
  • S580 History of Libraries – 3 credits
  • S680 The Book to 1450 – 3 credits
  • S681 The Book 1450 to Present – 3 credits
  • S623 Genealogy and Local History– 3 credits
  • S521 Humanities Information – 3 credits
  • S522 Social Science Information – 3 credits

Completion of nine credits from SLIS in information technologies from the following:

  • S554 Library Systems – 3 credits
  • S556 Systems Analysis and Design – 3 credits
  • S541 Information Policy – 3 credits
  • S652 Digital Libraries – 3 credits
  • S533 Online Searching – 3 credits
  • S532 Information Architecture for the Web – 3 credits
  • S605 Internship in Library and Information Science – 3 credits

A minimum of 23 credit hours is required in the Department of History for the Master of Arts degree, including H547.
