Master of Library Science Certificate in Public or Nonprofit Management (SPEA) (42 credits)

Designed for the student seeking courses that address management skills relevant to those who may direct academic, public or corporate libraries. Academic exercises will acquaint students with issues in human resource management, public finance and dealing with governance bodies such as a Board of Directors. Courses from the School of Public and Environmental Administration (SPEA) are available either on campus or online.

Course requirements:

From SLIS 30 graduate credits including S503 or S504, S501, S551, S502, S506 or S505 to meet the foundation area requirements, and including 15 SLIS elective credits that should include S552, S553, or (academic, public, special, or medical library management), S533, S605 internship as an administrative assistant, S525 or S526, and S541 or S540.

From SPEA for the Public Management Certificate 12 graduate credits that include V502 Public Management, V560 Public Finance and Budgeting, V561 Public Personnel Management, and V506 Statistical Analysis for Public Affairs.

From SPEA for the Nonprofit Management Certificate 12 graduate credits that include V522 Human Resource Management in Nonprofit Organizations, V525 Management in the Nonprofit Sector, V526 Financial Management for Nonprofit Organizations, and one 3–credit elective from Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector, Ethics and Values of Philanthropy, Fund Development for Nonprofit Organizations, Public Relations in Nonprofits, or History of Philanthropy.

From SPEA for the Executive Management in Library Science Certificate – this dual program is in development and will be designed for those who already hold the MLS degree, have successful professional library experience, and seek to advance into a management or directorship position. Courses from SPEA will be delivered online and courses from SLIS will be completed on an independent and internship basis with placement in the student's local community. The certification, if approved, will likely total 15 graduate credits.

To apply for the SPEA Certificate Programs, please go to http://www.spea.iupui.edu. Select the "Prospective Students" link and under apply select graduate certificate. When you complete the application, please select the appropriate certificate as the program that you want to pursue. There will also be a section entitled supplemental questions, and in this section please include a statement that you want to pursue the executive library science certificate.
