SLIS INDY SURVIVAL GUIDE

Below is a listing compiled by SLIS students. The purpose of this listing is to serve as a brief "survival guide" for the IUPUI campus, especially for those who commute in on Fridays and Saturdays for courses during the day, and stay overnight. FOOD
High marks for:
- Subway in the IUPUI Campus Food Court in the Conference Center at Michigan and University.
- Taco Bell and Q'Doba on Indiana Avenue northeast of the Conference Center.
- Indiana University Hospital Cafeteria (first floor) on Michigan Street is good for salads and a variety of hot meals; fast and plenty of seating and open on all days.
- Sandwich Shops in University College two buildings to the west of the IUPUI University Library; may not be open on Saturdays.
- McDonalds in Riley Hospital
- Chancellor's Bar area in the University Conference Center.
COFFEE
- IU Hospital Cafeteria.
- IU Gina's Coffee Bar in University Hospital.
- Starbucks, on 10th and Indiana, next to Hardee's.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
- IUPUI Financial Aid Office (info on scholarships, forms, and applications)
- IUPUI Financial Aid Graduate Student Counseling appointments can be made by calling 317-274-4162 or by sending an email to finaid@iupui.edu. Phone counseling is also available.
- Fastweb.com - you can fill out an online profile and they will search for possible scholarship data for you.
LODGING
High marks and low prices for:
- Super 8 Motel in Plainfield; relatively new and inexpensive;continental breakfast; 15 minute drive into Indy and IUPUI campus.
- Fairfield Inn, Indianapolis/College Park; can ask for university rate; 9251 Wesleyan Road, 1-317-879-9100; excellent continental breakfast....WOW make your own waffles!
- Red Roof Inn, Indy South; within 10-15 minutes from campus. To get very reduced rates, reservations MUST be booked online. It can usually be done a day ahead of time.
- LaQuinta Inn, Indy East; within 10-15 minutes from campus. To get very reduced rates, reservations MUST be booked online. It can usually be done a day ahead of time.

BOOKS AND SUPPLIES
- Main campus bookstore in Cavanaugh Hall http://www.bookstore.iupui.edu
- Half Price Books may have some text titles either required for classes or supplemental to classes, although they are not a textbook supplier as such.

- Many textbooks can be found online and much cheaper than bookstores.

PARKING
- No real good news here. Come early.
- Wishard parking garage on Walnut Street is free on weekends. Alternate parking off campus and the IUPUI shuttle and IndyGo schedules.
- Some fine it best to use the "North Garage" and pay by the hour; it is seldom full and has an enclosed bridge (tube) to classrooms and library.
- Check your e-mail, especially on Fridays, to learn of special events that may take place on Saturdays on and around the IUPUI campus resulting in heavy traffic.
- We will be looking for more use of off campus locations for classes such as Glendale Mall on the eastside of Indy, schools and public libraries which have more parking space, and free.
BEST PLACE TO STUDY OR RELAX
- IUPUI University Library has many group study rooms (no food allowed, but drinks in containers with lids are okay);
- Study area and vending machines in IUPUI University Library lowest level room 0120.
- The Student Center in the University College Building has several tables, study carrols, TV's. and pool tables.
- The second floor of the University College Building has comfortable chairs in areas that are not busy on Friday's and the weekend.
- IU Medical Library on Walnut Street north of the University Hospital.
- The 24 Hour Student Technology Center Lab in IT131.
ATM LOCATIONS
- University Conference Center in the gift shop.
- Riley or University Hospital in front of McDonald's.
- Between the Library and the BS/SPEA building on the second floor.
- IU Natatorium at University and New York.
- Outside on north side of Cavanaugh Hall at University and Michigan.
- Inside the Michigan/University Blvd entrance to the Food Court.
